Arsenal will spend big-money in January

Arsene Wenger is prepared to make more big-money moves at Arsenal, but will also persevere with youth development.

Wenger is a well-known advocate of developing youth players with opportunities in the first-team, while being relatively prudent in the transfer windows.

But the Gunners broke their usual practice over the summer with the club record acquisition of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.

The Arsenal boss insists that the club will continue to develop players through their renowned academy, but accepts that spending money on established players is essential to keep up in the Premier League.

"Of course, it's a big responsibility to spend that amount of money. But I feel comfortable with it because we had the money to do it. Before we couldn't have done it because we didn't have the money available. It's as simple as that," Wenger told the club's official website.

"I had a huge sense of responsibility when we built the stadium to get the club through it without going bankrupt. The first years were difficult, and also explained why we lost some players.

"Now we are in a more comfortable financial position, I - more than anyone - want the great players to play for Arsenal Football Club. If we have to spend the money to do that, I will spend the money."

Arsenal never lost a game after Ozil's join, and now Arsenal may buy Suarez in January, that will certainly make Arsenal more powerful.

Robben: We are not Barcelona 2.0

Many people would like to say Bayern is Barcelona 2.0 since their coach are Pep Guardiola, who change Barcelona to a dream team.

Howerver, Arjen Robben has insisted that Bayern Munich are not trying to copy Barcelona's style of play, but rather following their own football philosophy.

Arjen Robben: "Bayern nije nova verzija Barcelone"

The Bundesliga champions have been in impressive form in recent weeks, with a number of high-profile names claiming Bayern are an improved version of Pep Guardiola's old Blaugrana side.

However, Robben has dismissed suggestions that Bayern are merely imitating Barcelona's Tiki-Taka style under the Catalan coach.

"We are not Barcelona Part II. The comparison might seem logical but the focus should always be on ourselves," he told the reporters.

"We are Bayern Munich and we have different players to Barcelona. We don't have Xavi or Messi, but we have great players at the club."

But Real Madrid have now joined the race, with Carlo Ancelotti having a 'close working relationship' with the veteran midfielder from their time shared at Milan.

However, Pirlo's main criteria is regular playing time and sees Madrid as a club where that may prove more difficult.

The Italy international was linked with a move to the Bernabeu in the summer, but nothing materialised due to their signing of Asier Illarramendi.

Former Bianconeri captain Gianluca Vialli has also added fuel to the Tottenham rumour, suggesting they are in the driving seat for the 34-year-old's signature.

“I’ve heard rumours from England that there has been contact between Pirlo and Tottenham for next season,” said the ex-Old Lady striker.

Juventus remains Pirlo's number one team and will stay there if he is promised first-team football, but is prepared to move abroad to another team of Juve's calibre.

“Juve are my priority, but I don’t want to be a weight for anybody. The years go by, but it is not written that I have to stay here just because I am called Pirlo," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“If I had to change, perhaps I’ll go abroad. I’ll certainly continue playing for a high level team."

Eusebio thought he is better than Ronaldo

Benfica's 1960s great Eusebio has weighed in to the argument, saying he was upset by what he considered to be an unfair comparison because he had played fewer matches than Ronaldo.

"I am saddened because we can't make that comparison. It's a mistake because I played (around) 60 matches to score that amount (41 goals)," Eusebio told Portuguese national television.

Ronaldo not in Eusebio's league, claims Figo

Ronaldo reached 43 goals in 106 internationals after his hat-trick earned Portugal a 4-2 comeback win over Northern Ireland in last month's World Cup qualifier.

"This is historic. I'd scored a lot of hat-tricks for Real Madrid but never any for Portugal," he said after the game.

"Going above Eusebio in the scorers' list was a natural thing to happen and it was only a matter of time but still I am really proud," the smiling player said while showing off the match ball.

Ronaldo, a product of Sporting Lisbon's youth academy, has had a massive impact during his time with Manchester United, where he won the Champions League, and at Real Madrid.

Eusebio spent most of his career at Benfica, winning the 1962 European Cup and 11 league titles.

Those behind the 'Black Panther' say he excelled at a time when soccer science was limited.

“Eusebio had no preparation, no gyms, no academies. He became what he did through sheer talent,” said Hilario Conceicao, former coach to Ronaldo and Figo.

His 1960s team mate Jose Augusto told o Jogo: “Footballs are all high-tech and vulcanised today, much faster, lighter and with unpredictable trajectories. With today's balls Eusebio would have scored double the goals.”

Despite their differences the two players have a lot in common - devastating shooting, power and pace and the ability to use both feet.

“Technically the two are not actually that distant. Both are incredible hard-workers who loved to practice and improved from a very young age,” said Jose Pereira, the head of Portugal's coach association.

“Ronaldo and Eusebio thrived thanks to a tremendous sense of opportunity up front and explosive runs,” Pereira said. “Both are football giants.”

That said, with Ronaldo still performing, a major international trophy or a player of the tournament award in Brazil next year would perhaps tilt the balance in his favour for good. – Reuters
